Rank the Settlers resources in terms of importance.?
Hey Everyone
I've been reading people online rank the Settlers resources (in the board game Settlers of Catan) in terms of importance and was wondering how you would do it?
-Obviously ignoring variables like production value, and relative placement which will vary in every game.
-Just talking about the original game.
-The overall usefulness, so think about all of the different approaches to winning, but also think about the commonalities between all of those strategies, what everyone needs to do.
-Take into consideration the number of each (3 of brick and ore, and 4 of wheat, forest and sheep places). So having less of those two might increase how 'important' they are.
-So in general just rank the five of them in terms of how important they are to winning a game of Settlers in general.
Toward the beginning and into the middle of the game, lumber (wood) and clay (brick) are of the greatest importance. They are both needed for road segments and settlements, the building blocks of any expanding civilization on the island of Catan. You should try to end up with a lumber and a clay in your starting hand, if possible, so you can build a road right away on your first turn. At the very least, you should have access to lumber and clay at the start of the game. If you are the first to place your starting settlement, place it where you will get the best payout of these two resources.
Later in the game, grain becomes the most important resource. Grain is, after all, needed for all available expansions except for roads, and the player who controls the grain supplies will generally win the game. If you don't have a decent supply of grain coming in, you will be doomed to failure.
Wool (sheep) is necessary for settlements and development cards, but during the later stages of the game, it becomes less and less important. Near the end of the game, the only way you will be able to trade wool for the resources you need is with the bank. Let other players collect wool, and you can trade your other resources to other players for the wool you need. Eventually you will even be able to trade one of your resources for two or three of their wool, so desperate will they be to get rid of it in favor of more useful resources.
Ore (rocks) is necessary for both cities and development cards, and you will eventually need a lot of it. But other players will generally trade their ore for resources they need (like grain!), so if your income of resources is good overall, you should be able to get enough ore to do what you need to do to win. - LJS
