can you combine different settlers of catan expansions together?
I have settlers of catan with the seafarers expansion, and I am thinking of getting cities and knights of the barbarians one. Can I use them all at the same time or not?
Yes... sort of! The expansions are all usable together in many different combinations. When we first started getting expansions, we also had just Seafarers. When we got Cities and Knights we alternated between the two until we eventually decided to add them both together. It sometimes takes a little creativity with regrads to the rules (such as how many points to play to) as these aren't provided for every combination. But from a game mechanics point of view, they can be mixed.
As for Traders and Barbarians, I'm not sure how much you know about it, but this includes several different expansions. Mixing these all together would be more of a challenge. Most of them include a few different tiles so using them all at once would mean there was no space left for the regular tiles. This doesn't mean it can't be done though. You could, for example, easily use the Fishermen of Catan with Cities and Knights, or use Barbarian Attack with Seafarers.
Ultimately, the joy of Catan is its flexibility, so if you want to use loads of them at once, go for it. It may mean you end up with a board twice the size of normal, but that can be fun! Just try and remember to think up any rules you may need before you start to avoid any arguments. Also, allow plenty of time. Expect a 4-player game with a couple of expansions to easily eat up a whole evening. If you do plan on trying to them ALL at once... plan for a long weekend!
